Asia Pacific Youth Forum 2011

On January 23-27, I was given forum’s scholarship to present my work related to exploring climate change through cultural expression. Simply, the program which is called “Asia Pacific Forum: Youth Action on Climate Change” brought the theme of Exploration through Cultural Expression. This forum which was held by SEAMEO-SPAFA attracted over 150 delegates from 16 countries including Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, UK, and Vietnam. The event was sponsored by the Japan Foundation.

During 4 days of the forum, all speakers and participants from Asia Pacific discussing how cultures can be affected by climate change and vice versa. They were 6 speakers selected from Indonesia, coming from different background and institution such as Research Center of IPB, Ministry of Public Works, Journalist of TV One,etc.
Ricky Raymon as YEP! representative brought the current YEP!’s project on garbage’s recycle called “Bank Sendu” which also one of ASEANpreneur’s competition finalists last year.

While me myself, I presented the role of Indigenous people preventing the impact of climate change and raising awareness of climate change by bringing elements of culture.

Some highlighted topics are : Introducing role of media (drawing, songs, art models from recycle stuffs) to create awareness of climate change by Maria Andel- Philippines, Spatial Planning as tools from Ayu Wiryodisastro-Indonesia, Hydrogen as renewable energy by Rina Arizumi-Japan, Puppet Show of Reflection & Strategy towards sustainable development in Indonesia by Doddy JI-Indonesia, Singing for Peace and 350 Vietnam by Phan TQ and Jenny-Vietnam, Group work on Climate Change and Poverty by Rusrann L-Cambodia,

Campaign of Climate Change through Journalistic-Praga Shanti-Nepal, Wordle as effective tool for teaching Climate Change topic by Nurul Hussna-Malaysia,and many more.

A lot of interesting activities were conducted to reach the aim of the program like Theater workshop conducted by Facilitator from UK, Christine Hogan. On the first day, it was Mapping workshop, where participants asked to mapping the condition of each country by making country’s model from recycle stuffs and exhibiting problem faced in each country.

The next day participants sharing excitement by working in group transforming images into climate change messages.

Another interesting workshop was Storytelling workshop with Dr. Wajuppa, expert of storytelling from Thailand. Participants were asked to perform in group making a scene of folk story or group-made story which reflects climate change impacts.
